Sand Rivers Camp
Sand Rivers Camp is located in the Selous Game Reserve in southern Tanzania. Situated in a beautiful position on the river, to the west of the main game areas, this camp has long enjoyed an excellent reputation!
Elegant public areas are in stone and thatch, with a modest pool on a deck above the water. The five standard and three suite rooms are similarly constructed and beautiful dressed.
Motorboat safaris are extremely good here, with good chances of game along the river and relatively easy access to Steigler's Gorge. Vehicle safaris tend to be quite gentle, with full day excursions over to the main game areas around Lake Manze being the exception rather than the rule. Walking safaris also offer good chances of game encounters - with elephant in particular.
Fundu Lagoon
Fundu Lagoon is the epitome of a "shabby chic paradise" with a distinct Robinson Crusoe air. The lodge is set in a remote and peaceful location on the south western side of Pemba Island, and is only accessible by boat.
Getting to Pemba is another hop further than Zanzibar, but the number of visitors drops dramatically and the sense of adventure climbs considerably!
A stay at Fundu Lagoon is all about making the most of this virtually untouched and very beautiful island, exploring the forests and villages on foot, sailing the myriad deserted coral islands, diving and snorkelling.
The lodge itself is a quite outdoorsy blend of thatch and canvas, it is beautifully appointed and offers superb food and service.
There are 18 rooms, consisting of canvas tents set under makuti (thatch) roofs on wooden
decks, all with views over the sea. The rooms are equipped with large double or twin beds, mosquito
nets, ceiling and standing fans, and indoor and outdoor seating areas. Each has an ensuite bathroom
with fresh hot water shower, toilet and basin. The rooms are connected to the main buildings by
wooden walkways or paths through indigenous forest. Some rooms are situated along the
beachfront and the remaining on the hillside, which have wide views over the lagoon.
Two of the
eighteen rooms are suites, with their own private chill out deck and plunge pool, and four are
superior suites which also have an extensive indoor and outdoor lounge space and mezzanine
platform.
The rooms are connected to the main buildings by wooden walkways or paths through indigenous forest. Some rooms are situated along the beachfront and the remaining on the hillside. All have amazing views, especially the ones on the hillside.
There are 3 categories of rooms: standard, suites and superior suites. The suites all have private plunge pools; the superior suites offer more spacious accommodation, 2 private terraces and a super-sized plunge pool.
The main hotel is built under thatch and is large and airy and overlooks the sea. Breakfast, lunch
and dinner are served in the main dining area or at the jetty bar with a three course lunch and dinner, all with a choice of dishes of international standard. Some meals will be served on the white
sandy beach. There are three bars, one of which is situated a third of the way along a long jetty which stretches way out into the sea.
The hotel has a fully equipped dive centre, ‘Dive 7/10’. Trips are available to nearby Misali Island
with a pristine beach and superb snorkelling and diving. Dhow sunset cruises and canoe safaris through the mangroves are also available. Excursions around Pemba island can also be organised with some advanced notice.
Fundu also has a stunning infinity hillside swimming pool with a cocktail and snack bar overlooking
the ocean!
